wiofone™ from
VocalTec amplifies VoIP as "killer app" - Imagine this: you're a
WiMAX operator trying to break into a new market. You've got real
challenges-there is an incumbent telephone company that already
offers voice and DSL and they've been there for 100 years.
Outside of mobility/portability
in your wireless product line, how do you claw subscribers away from
the incumbent? Before you talk up portability/mobility, you better
be matching the incumbent's services to provide a level of comfort
for the subscriber. What to do? How about just dropping in some very
familiar-looking desktop phones that also function as WiMAX CPE?
The VocalTec wiofone™ provides the WiMAX service provider with a desktop
phone and home/SOHO networking device (it's a WiMAX CPE with a phone or
is that a phone with a WiMAX CPE?). Here's the specs:
frequency 2.3-2.7 or
3.3-3.8 GHz
CPE throughput: 10
Mbps down, 3 Mbps up
channel widths:
3.5/5/7/8.75/10/20 MHz

protocols: SIP, H.323 (IP-to-IP) and Megaco/H.248, MGCP (IP-PSTN)

dmedia Takes CES Innovations 2008 Award for F200 WiMAX Personal
Navigation Device
Taiwan’s dmedia added another award to its trophy case when CES honored
it with an Innovations 2008 Award for its F200 wireless handset. The
F200 combines WiMAX, location-based services, and GPS navigation on a
dual-screen phone. dmedia has won Best of Innovation Awards at CES two
years in a row.
The F200 is a GPS phone with dual screen, single touch panel, GPS
chipset built-in, Bluetooth enabled, 2.0 Mega-pixel digital camera,
Mobile WiMAX supported, and incorporates a G-Sensor. The G-Sensor
enables a step counter (pedometer function). The dimensions of the
handset are: 124 x 46.9 x 15.9 (mm).
eePC wins design award at CES, will ship
with "WiMAX inside"
What's also
significant about the eePC is that ASUS will integrate WiMAX in it
making it the first laptop to ship with "WiMAX inside". I'm using
quotation marks here with care as Intel has announced plans to use the
two-word phrase "WiMAX inside" for marketing with its ecosystem partners.
The eePC currently ships with Wi-Fi.
The next version of the eePC will ship with a larger (8.9") screen and
with WiMAX. This should put ASUS ahead in the race toward getting a
native WiMAX laptop on the market. In addition to the consumer market, a
WiMAX-enabled eePC should do well in education markets where a school
district or university could deploy WiMAX "native" for student and
faculty use. The WiMAX-enabled eePC could also have a quick uptake in
enterprise markets as well especially for mobile workers.

WiMAX realtime game device
POSBRO, POSDATA’s subsidiary for
mobile WiMAX device, announced the intention to launch mobile
WIMAX online game business and devices in the
United States today at CES 2008.
POSBRO already showed the FLYVO G100 portable game device at the
WiMAX World USA in 2007.
The G100 will be rolling out via KT in Korea early this year. In
the U.S. the G100 will be launching around the beginning of 4Q,
2008, or end of 1Q, 2009.
At the CES 2008 the G100 is demonstrated at the SPRINT booth
with SPRINT’s XOHM Mobile WiMAX network.
I am not sure if WiMAX really will take off already in 2008. If
it does the G100 looks like a nice device for it.

Trolltech Expands its Qtopia VoIP
Offering with Acquisition
Oslo, Norway, 19 June - 2007 - Trolltech announced today that it has
acquired the assets of FONAV, Inc. the maker of the FONAV unified
communications platform. The platform, developed by FONAV using
Trolltech’s Qtopia®, is presence-based, multi-modal software that
brings an easy-to-use rich communication solution to the mass market
leveraging a platform for phone manufacturers and broadband service
providers.
With the proliferation of Wi-Fi and WiMax connected
devices and the growth of VoIP use in the home, handset
manufacturers are looking for a standard platform for bringing
connected devices to market quickly and to offer rich communication
services with an attractive and friendly user experience.
Trolltech’s
acquisition of FONAV will provide a solution that spans traditional
cellular devices to VoIP devices enabling a rich communication
experience. Trolltech is committed to its promise of delivering
platforms that increase handset manufacturers, consumer electronics
makers and operators ability to bring innovative products to market
quickly and cost efficiently.
“Trolltech continues
to position itself as the standard application platform for mobile
devices,” said Haavard Nord, co-founder and co-CEO, Trolltech. “With
this move, we’ve cemented our leadership in offering the best
platform for Linux-based VoIP development,” he added.
Unified
Communications Platform
The FONAV solution is
expected to be incorporated into Trolltech’s Qtopia product line and
offers a presence-based, unified live in-box for calls, email,
instant messaging and voice messages. Presence is also integrated
into the address book, and the user can easily control how and when
he wishes to reach others providing an always-on connection to the
user’s social network. The Platform also creates new revenue
opportunities for service providers, including broadband and VoIP
operators, wire-line operators and web portals/communities.
The Unified
Communications Platform is fully SIP standards based and includes
SIP compliant VoIP services with calls made to and received from any
number. Instant messaging uses the open source Jabber (XMPP)
protocol allowing users to communicate using text or voice with any
open community such as Google™ Talk. Email includes POP3 and IMAP
access and WiFi is compatible with 802.xx standards with secure
access using hardware-based WEP and WPA. Hotspot authentication for
selected wireless ISPs is also supported.
“The connected device
space is booming with innovative devices – from the Nokia N800 to
the Apple iPhone,
or the Sony Mylo. A rich software platform is a key ingredient to
building devices like these,” said Ram Fish, CEO, FONAV. “By
combining forces with Trolltech, we now offer a rich open standards
and open source platform for device vendors and a way of helping
device manufacturers achieve fast time-to-market with a high quality
user experience. Qtopia provides an excellent foundation to
integrate multimedia, web and other technologies and enables phone
manufacturers and service providers to innovate quickly at lower
cost.”
The acquisition marks
the first acquisition the company has made since its public offering
in July 2006. FONAV was founded in January 2006 by Ram Fish and
Dilip Kenchammana and funded by Charles River Ventures and
individual investors. All FONAV employees will be incorporated into
Trolltech’s Redwood City, California office.

Samsung Debuts Handset for
WiMAX-Like Networks.
Samsung Unveils Phone for WiBro Networks
by Anton Shilov
Samsung Electronics recently unveiled its
m8000 smartphone that runs operating system windows and is designed
to work in high-speed networks: CDMA EVDO as well as WiBro, a
flavour of WiMAX developed for South Korea.
The Samsung m8000 handset looks similar to
the i730 designed for the U.S. market that has 2.8” QVGA (240x320)
65 000 color touch screen, supports wireless
LAN (WLAN), Bluetooth and is designed for CDMA EVDO networks,
which are currently offered by Verizon Wireless. However, the m8000
features additional camera for video-calls and video-conferencing
and can also support wireless broadband technology WiBro, which is
expected to go live in 2006.
Using WiBro networks clients will be able
to download data at up to 3Mb/s, upload at up to 1Mb/s in the range
of 1-5 kilometers around the base station. The implementation in
Korea is based on 802.16-2004 and 802.16e Draft3 or
later version that provides channel link of more than 9MHz and at
least 512Kb/s downlink and 128Kb/s uplink at 60Km/h speed.
While WiBro is not exactly WiMAX, in
November 2004, Intel and LG Electronics executives reportedly agreed
to ensure compatibility between WiBro and WiMAX technologies.
Various versions of WiMAX allow devices to
connect to a network at speeds of up to 70Mb/s in the range of 31
miles around the “access point”.
